Technical Document Writer – Security Documentation
Location: Sydney or Canberra
Contract: 12 months + extensions
Clearance: Must hold TSPV
About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Document Writer to review, update, and maintain a suite of security-related technical documents that support the Department’s operational and policy objectives. The successful candidate will translate complex technical security concepts into clear, concise, and audience-appropriate language while ensuring compliance with corporate branding, classification, and publishing standards.
You will be responsible for updating document families such as:
- Technical Security Policies
- Equipment Guides and Lists
- Technical Recommendations for Security Environments
- Risk Assessment Templates
- User-Facing Security Guidance
Key Responsibilities
- Review and update existing security-related documents (policies, procedures, system design guides, risk assessments) to reflect current technology, threat landscape, and legislative changes
- Liaise with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and ensure alignment with government policies
- Convert technical jargon into plain English using the Department’s Plain Language Guidelines
- Conduct self-reviews and coordinate peer reviews; incorporate feedback before final sign-off
- Deliver briefings or workshops on documentation use and maintenance when required
- Provide regular progress updates and maintain risk logs
- Store and manage documents in approved content-management systems with proper metadata and audit trails
KPIs:
- 95% on-time delivery
- 2% post-release errors
Mandatory Qualifications
- Understanding of government security frameworks (e.g., PSPF, ISO31000, Australian Government Information Security Manual)
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience in security architecture, network security, or cyber incident response
- Published technical guides, white papers, or standards
- Familiarity with formal review processes (e.g., Commonwealth Style Manual)
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience producing technical documentation for government or regulated environments
- Strong command of plain-language techniques
- Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint; familiarity with SharePoint or Confluence
- Ability to manage multiple document streams and meet deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal skills for working with SMEs and presenting to non-technical audiences
- Attention to detail in applying branding, classification markings, and citation standards
